I AUBADE

Elvis Perkins will return this winter with a new album called I Aubade on his own label, MIR Records. Largely self-recorded at home and around the country, Perkins describes I Aubade as “on the whole an autonomous project,” marking a departure from his previous full-band endeavors. There’s a lot of wordplay involved in the album title, as Perkins explains below, but here’s a quick primer: Aubades are morning love songs, the complement to nighttime serenades; explains Wiki, “In the strictest sense of the term, an aubade is a song from a door or window to a sleeping woman.” At its core, lead single “Hogus Pogus” is just Perkins and his guitar, but there’s so much glimmering noise and percussive ruckus around the fringes that it feels like a dream. In other words, it sounds like waking up to love. Listen below, where you can also read a note from Perkins.

A statement from Perkins on the new album:

Here lies my third Long-Playing collection of songs. The vast majority of what can be heard is the product of my own placement of microphone to source in the period between February 2012 & December 2013. My previous releases had for the most part been made with steady players in studios and overheard by engineers and producers, so this was for me both a novel approach and a return to the 4-tracking solitary self of my early 20′s.

I recorded and edited mostly at home {middle new york}, sometimes with others and at their places {hudson, dallas, los angeles}, in american hotels and for a spell in a “Wilderness” {im}mobile home happenstantially catching radio waves {ojai}. Ultimately it is a record full of waves and of changes. Pink and white Mini Moog waves; man receives the heart of a hog and undergoes spiritual transformation; AM waves run off with fluorescent wives-to-be; the living become dead and are brought back again; barking waves, interior waves, static waves. Dewan oscillators turn medicine Tarkas; cosmic waves, sea waves, the one wave of the river; one man becomes another man without losing his skin; for a brief moment a woman becomes mannequin; another leaves secretariat for ceremonial administration; drones at large awake and alter course. And so another Earthling’s notions begat and became waves and WAVs.

After thinking I would call the record the unreal Romance infinitive, “Transformir” {its Morpho’s body emerged from my studio and newly-established label, MIR}, I thought I might simply call it “Waves.” But upon reaching dry land of completion, I discovered a word novel to me and better fitting the songs: ’Aubade.’ It conveniently spoke the name of the sort of piece I had in the beginning imagined presenting on this album. One to attend the renewal and translation pointed to by the Mesoamerican Long Count Calendar, the Eagle and the Condor Prophecy of farther south, the dawning of the Fifth Age of the Hopi & that of Aquarius, etc, etc.

And the word itself performed a little revolution before the eye. On first sight and with atrophied French it read to me as ’obeyed.’ And I was led to consider whom and what man-made I have obeyed in lieu of natural and supernatural law. And that turned to ’Io bayed’ {a moon of Jupiter named for the lover he changed to white heifer}. And that turned to ’I/O bade’ {the analog to digital interface I faced in making this record}. Finally it rested back with the hopeful ’I aubade’, as whom and what we obey can go from night to day at will.

Now to me more present tense verb than antique noun, to ’aubade’ is all I’m aiming and hoping for here, to offer redoubling night a suggestion of daybreak.

On March 16, 2013 Jason Molina passed away of natural causes after a longstanding battle with alcohol. Jason's death shook the world of many music-lovin' souls and the music world as a whole. At 39 years old, he left behind a remarkable song catalog and lasting impression on anyone who heard his music with Songs: Ohia and Magnolia Electric Co. Starting as a heavy metal bass player from Loraine, Ohio, he became one of the most influential and iconic singer-songwriters in indie music.

In essence, Jason was the “Pied Piper” for the outcasts, the lonely, the heartbroken, and the lost singing in some secret, abstract, yet universal language where everyone understands the deeper meaning of his imagery. Known for tapping into the heart of the working-man's blues, Jason's music is mythical, mystical, and brilliant creating a sound that is eerie and melancholic all the while remaining comfortable. So, it is with this album we would like to honor Jason's music, his memory, and his genius.

Rock the Cause Records, a music based nonprofit and record label, will donate a portion of the net proceeds from this album to MusiCares.

Orange Juice is an anthemic singalong about a recipe for happiness - "a little bit of you, alcohol, tobacco, caffeine, ephedrine and orange juice".
B-side Maybe I Will See You Again is, rather aptly after the concoction of Orange Juice before it, a song about standing at a street corner with a hangover. It has previously appeared on the album 'Stanley Brinks Hovers', but this is a new rock'n roll version backed by The Wave Pictures.

Stanley Brinks began performing officially as André Herman Düne in 1999, sharing lead vocals, guitar playing and songwriting with his brother David in the band Herman Düne for a number of years. They released several albums and toured extensively in UK, gaining and owing a lot to great support from John Peel. He has used many monikers for various side-projects, but since leaving Herman Düne in 2006, he has been known solely as Stanley Brinks.
Born in Paris, Stan has been living between New York, San Francisco, Malta and Berlin for about a decade, always on the move. He has recorded more than 100 albums, collaborated with the New York Antifolk scene on several occasions, recorded and toured with traditional Norwegian musicians, and played a lot with The Wave Pictures.

The Wave Pictures are David Tattersall, Franic Rozycki and Jonny "Huddersfield" Helm. Formed in 1998 when Franic and David lived in a village called Wymeswold, the band played with several drummers until Jonny became a permanent member in 2003 replacing Hugh J Noble. In the beginning the band learned to play together by covering Jonathan Richman songs but soon David was writing lots of original material.
They have since released five studio albums to critical acclaim and played numerous sessions on BBC 6 Music, Radio 1 and Xfm. The interest generated by these recordings has enabled The Wave Pictures to play shows all over the world with artists including Jeffrey Lewis, Darren Hayman, Stanley Brinks, Freschard and Herman Dune.

The Perfect Prescription is the second studio album by Spacemen 3. September 1987

It is a concept album, "a vision of a drug trip from inception to its blasted conclusion, highs and lows fully intact." The music becomes progressively more orchestral and serene until the high of the trip, represented by "Ecstasy Symphony"/"Transparent Radiation (Flashback)," moving on to the moment of realisation where the high has faded and the comedown ensues, represented by the harsh opening guitar chords in "Things'll Never Be the Same." Coming down is represented in the blues based "Come Down Easy," whilst the potentially fatal effects of an overdose are portrayed in the final track "Call the Doctor." The music was written by the band except "Transparent Radiation" which is a Red Krayola cover from their 1967 album Parable of Arable Land. The band also borrow heavily from the gospel standard covered by Bob Dylan, "In My Time of Dying," for "Come Down Easy" and pay homage to Lou Reed in "Ode to Street Hassle."

The vinyl edition of The Perfect Prescription includes liner notes by author R. Hunter Gibson:

"'The Perfect Prescription' is an album that will be left out of the rock 'n' roll readers, just as the great texts bid Bo Diddley throw down his cloak for the quickstep of Eddie Cochran. If there has ever been an untrumpeted classic, here it is. An arcane, apocryphal document, this record, in late '80s UK, was telegraphing a message of unconcerned hope in a world hypnotised by guilt-ridden social work rock. Here, more than anywhere, Spacemen 3 have a vested interest in absolutely nothing. It is revolutionary and militant where most angry young rock is liberal at best. It is extreme and accurate. Like 'Aftermath' it captures every aspect of the age that would later be analysed. As the unassuming soundtrack of a country breaking down and a world breaking up, its very nature means that it has been ignored.

Spacemen 3, like all the great rock 'n' rollers, from Arthur Parker to Paul Gauguin, are revolutionary; this is their great manifesto, striding free from the pharmacy raid of their debut armed with the keys of the musical medicine cabinet. When we left off things would never be the same. But the other side of the locked door, well, it's like the white one in the story.

If 'Sound of Confusion' denied the wider stretches of the sense in favour of the immediately, roughly sensual, this script paned out from some suburban global village Viet vet subculture into a poppyfield undersown with righteous paranoia. And still the smell of burning rubber on trash yankee wheels thickens the air...

Farewell Transmission: The Music Of Jason Molina

En memoria del fallecido Jason Molina, el día 22 de abril se publicará un recopilatorio de homenaje a su carrera musical a través del sello sin ánimo de lucro “Rock The Cause”. Todos los beneficios irán repartidos en parte a MusiCares que apoya a artistas con depresión, adicción, discapacidad u otros problemas de salud, y otra a la familia.

Saldrá bajo el título de “Farewell Transmission: The Music Of Jason Molina” donde se dan cita diversos artistas de la talla de My Morning Jacket, Murder By Death, Wooden Wand, Sarah Jaffe, The Black Swans o Bottomless Pit, entre otros.

En este recopilatorio los miembros de la banda y ex compañeros de Jason se reúnen bajo el nombre de Memorial Electric Company para realizar una canción inédita, “Arm In Arm”, así como una de las pistas favoritas que Molina tocaba en directo, antes no registrada, llamada “Trouble in Mind (Fade To Blue)”.

Ya puede escucharse el tema de Songs: Ohia “Farewell Transmission” que versionan My Morning Jacket. El vocalista Jim James también colabora en otra pista, “Almost Was Good Enough”.

Chris Hollow turned me on to this stunning version of the old spiritual, from Harvey Mandel’s Cristo Redentor album. Mandel played guitar with Canned Heat, he also plays on the Rolling Stones Black and Blue album (this in the period post-Mick Taylor where they were auditioning new guitarists). String arrangement by the legendary Hollywood arranger Nick De Caro… who plays accordion on the Stones’ “Back Street Girl”.

La primera actuación californiana de SONIC YOUTH tuvo lugar en pleno desierto Mojave, en el proto-festival Gila Monster Jamboree. A los asistentes se les entregaba un mapa que explicaba cómo llegar a un inhóspito y remoto emplazamiento donde los grupos —Redd Kross, Meat Puppets, los PsiCom de Perry Farrell— tocaron a ras de suelo y el público pudo deambular libremente y consumir psicotrópicos a su antojo. ‘’Stuart Sweezy montaba aquel disparatado evento y nos pagó el avión para tocar en pleno desierto’’, recuerda Kim Gordon. ‘’Aprovechamos para actuar en Los Ángeles, San Francisco y Seattle. A las bandas de la Costa Este les cuesta introducirse en la Costa Oeste, pero de pronto nosotros teníamos una identidad californiana. Firmar con el sello SST también fue importante en ese aspecto’’. El éxito del single junto a Lydia Lunch, «Death Valley 69», colaboró en dicha percepción.
